AMSA’s Response to the Supertyphoon Haiyan

null

 18th November 2013

My fellow AMSA members from the Philippines, the Asia-Pacific region, and beyond,

On the 8th of November, 2013, the Philippines was subjected to the Supertyphoon Haiyan, which caused a large loss of life and mass devastation in the Visayas islands in the Philippines. At the time of writing, it has been reported that in the Philippines, 3,976 people are dead, 18,175 are injured and 1,590 people still remain missing. Total damages in agriculture and infrastructure have been reported to amount to PHP 10,339,290,061 (equivalent to $USD 236,924,831).

While the Supertyphoon Haiyan has since dissipated, focus has been placed on the aftermath of the disaster, where government, local, national and international agencies have faced logistical problems as a result of the extreme damage to infrastructure. Unknown numbers of survivors do not have access to clean water, food and medicine, which is crucial in the acute stages of post-disaster management.

On behalf of AMSA International, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victims of the Supertyphoon Haiyan, and extend AMSA International’s support to AMSA Philippines in providing support and aid to those affected by this disaster. I hereby initiate the disaster response protocols of the Tokyo Declaration, of which all the Regional Chairpersons of AMSA International agreed upon and signed at the East Asian Medical Students’ Conference in Tokyo, Japan on the 30th December, 2012. As per protocols, an emergency fund has been set up for AMSA Philippines to use in their disaster relief and aid projects.

For more information on how individual AMSA members can provide assistance or donations to the relief efforts, please contact the Regional Chairperson of your local AMSA chapter. We have set up an Emergency Bulletin Board, which will be updated with regular news and photographs from the members of AMSA Philippines and those helping with humanitarian aid, and can be accessed on Facebook at

https://www.facebook.com/amsasresponsetosupertyphoonhaiyan.

We hope that AMSA Philippines, with the support of AMSA International, can improve the post-disaster situation of all those affected by the Supertyphoon Haiyan.

Sincerely yours,

SAMUEL VO

World Diabetes Day Competitions

Diabetes as it is today…
Declared by the WHO as a global epidemic, type II diabetes has become a major threat to global health. As many as 347 million people worldwideare currently suffering from diabetes. In addition, cases of adolescent diabetes have been on the rise as a result of global increase in childhood obesity and physical inactivity. If not taken care of, the disease can prove to be deadly; diabetes can gradually damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. In 2004, an estimated 3.4 million people died from consequences of high fasting blood sugar. Moreover, the disease proves a higher risk to the poor; over 80% of diabetes-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
However, there is a way to fight this global epidemic. As it is with all chronic diseases, prevention is the most effective defense againstdiabetes. The dangers of diabetes can be substantially mitigated bysimple lifestyle measures. Routine physical exercise and maintaining body weight, for example, can greatly reduce the risks. Disuse of tobacco is also a great way. Hence, public health education could play a crucial role in preventing and reducing the prevalence of diabetes. And this is where we medical students can step in.
AMSA International encourages you to join the fight against this rising modern epidemic. For the upcoming World Diabetes Day Competition, you can participate in the competition by submitting in your work in the form of an essay or a poster. AMSA International looks forward to seeing insightful and imaginative works from you! Take this chance and take your shot at changingthe world, using your acumen and creativity.

TRAVEL ASSISTANCE GRANT APPLICATION for EMASC Korea 2014

What is the AMSA International Travel Assistance Grant?

The AMSA International Travel Assistance Grant (TAG) Program provides limited travel funding to assist a selected few delegates with the cost associated with attending the conference (i.e. EAMSC 2014 in Seoul, Korea).

What are the rules and regulations of TAG?

  1. Interested delegates should register their interest with their chapter’s appointed Regional Chairperson (RC). The RC will then decide the two most suitable applicants from their chapter and forward their names to the Secretary of Finance.
  2. An applicant can only receive TAG once
  3. An applicant must not have previously attended an AMSA International conference
  4. TAG does not cover the registration fee of AMSC
  5. TAG per candidate will be set at either the maximum of 60% of the cost of travel fares (providing that the cheapest suitable option is chosen) or 600 USD, depending on which is the lower option of these two
  6. TAG is non-transferable and will be given only to the successful applicant. In case the applicant fails to attend the AMSC conference as per the requirements, TAG will be cancelled
  7. Successful applicants must attend at least 80% of the EAMSC conference schedules. The allocated TAG will be given to the applicant in cash (USD) on the last day of the conference if the above regulations are satisfied.
  8. The delegate must submit a report on the conference to the Secretary of Finance by 18th January 2014.
  9. In order to ensure that the applications are written by the applicants themselves, all applications will be checked for any duplication prior to their assessment. Any application suspected and determined to have been duplicated in part or in whole part will be disqualified.

How are successful applicants of TAG decided upon?

Several factors are taken into consideration by the selection committee (comprising the Overall Chairperson and the Vice Chairpersons). These include what the applicant will offer AMSA International in the future, what opportunities attending the conference will provide them and how they will optimise their time at the conference. The selection panel will also consider what the financial status of the country the applicant is residing in, as determined by the tier that the chapter is in. TAG allocation priority is given to tier 3 countries, however requests from other countries will be considered as well. The number of successful applicants will depend on the financial status of AMSA International.

What do I need to do to apply?

To be considered for application, delegates must submit the following:

  • A completed application form
  • A travel and fundraising plans, detailing the cheapest flight and travel options
  • A motivation letter summarising why you deserve to receive TAG and your plans for future involvement with AMSA International
  • A reference letter from the regional chairperson (RC) of the applicant’s chapter

All these documents must be submitted by 25 th October 2013 to Gi Tae Kwon (AMSA International Secretary of Finance). These can either be submitted by the regional chairperson or the delegate themselves via email finance@amsa-international.org. All applications will receive a receipt email, if you have not received a receipt email within 3 working days, please ensure your email successfully sent and that you have the correct email address.

Official Statement on the Pakistan Earthquake 2013

My fellow AMSA members from Pakistan, the Asia-Pacific region, and beyond,

As many of us have heard, on the Tuesday, the 24th of September, 2013, the Balochistan province’s remote Awaran district in Pakistan was hit with a 7.7-magnitude earthquake. At the time of writing, officials have confirmed 305 casualties in Awaran, and 43 in the neighbouring Kech district, figures that have continued to rise since the disaster’s first occurrence. Rescue workers have reported up to 80 percent of houses in the Awaran district have collapsed and road links have been disrupted from the tremor of the earthquake, obstructing relief efforts.

A state of emergency has been declared by the Balochistan government. The Pakistani government has responded by deploying soliders for rescue and relief efforts, and have made arrangements to send food, tents and blankets to the affected areas, with more than 2000 tents and food packages reaching the affected areas thus far.

On behalf of AMSA International, I would like to bring attention to the Pakistan Earthquake of 2013, and extend AMSA International’s support to AMSA Pakistan in hopes of overcoming this disaster. I hereby initiate the disaster response protocols of the Tokyo Declaration, all of which have been agreed upon and signed by the Regional Chairpersons of AMSA International at the East Asian Medical Students’ Conference in Tokyo, Japan on the 30th December, 2012. In the same manner as when the Tokyo Declaration protocols were last initiated in response to the floods in Jakarta, Indonesia earlier this year, an emergency fund has been set up for AMSA Pakistan to use in their relief and aid project.

For more information on how individual AMSA members can help those in need, please contact your local Regional Chairperson. Our Emergency Bulletin Board, which will be updated with news directly from our friends in AMSA Pakistan, can be accessed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/amsasresponsetopakistanearthquake2013
