World Diabetes Day Competitions

Diabetes as it is today…
Declared by the WHO as a global epidemic, type II diabetes has become a major threat to global health. As many as 347 million people worldwideare currently suffering from diabetes. In addition, cases of adolescent diabetes have been on the rise as a result of global increase in childhood obesity and physical inactivity. If not taken care of, the disease can prove to be deadly; diabetes can gradually damage the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. In 2004, an estimated 3.4 million people died from consequences of high fasting blood sugar. Moreover, the disease proves a higher risk to the poor; over 80% of diabetes-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
However, there is a way to fight this global epidemic. As it is with all chronic diseases, prevention is the most effective defense againstdiabetes. The dangers of diabetes can be substantially mitigated bysimple lifestyle measures. Routine physical exercise and maintaining body weight, for example, can greatly reduce the risks. Disuse of tobacco is also a great way. Hence, public health education could play a crucial role in preventing and reducing the prevalence of diabetes. And this is where we medical students can step in.
AMSA International encourages you to join the fight against this rising modern epidemic. For the upcoming World Diabetes Day Competition, you can participate in the competition by submitting in your work in the form of an essay or a poster. AMSA International looks forward to seeing insightful and imaginative works from you! Take this chance and take your shot at changingthe world, using your acumen and creativity.
